Newport NICA ~ Youth Mountain Bike Team

We are a Youth Mountain Bike Team for kids grade 6th-12th in Lincoln County.  We are part of the Oregon Interscholastic Cycling League.  Our practices begin in July and our season runs through late October.  We normally practice 2 days per week at either Wilder (by OCCC) or Big Creek Park and practices run from 5:30-7:30pm.  Kids need to be able to get a ride to and from practice.  We have many wonderful coaches who volunteer their time to help kids learn to ride, build self-esteem, and develop a love of biking.

Kids do not need to have any mountain biking experience.  Our goal is to be inclusive of everyone and teach them the skills they need to ride confidently and have fun!  Kids should have a properly functioning bike, a helmet, basic tools, and a form of hydration to begin.  We can also help find bikes and supplies if needed.  We do train towards racing other teams around the state and the season culminates with a state championship in October.  There are 4 races and a final state championship.  Races take place all over the state on weekends and we normally camp out as a team.  Arrangements can be made to transport kids to races if parents are not available to attend.

The cost to join the team is $275.  This included the fees to race and be part of the Oregon League.  There will also be a cost for a team jersey (to be determined).  Scholarships to join the team are available:  https://www.oregonmtb.org/scholarship  We can also make arrangement to help with jersey costs.  Our team does fundraising so that we can make the team accessible to all.

If you are interested in having your child join the team or have more questions, please email our Team Director, Daniella Crowder at: BikeNewport@charter.net
