Letter to Families

Posted on February 1, 2021

The following letter went out by Remind message on Friday:

Dear Students, Parents and Guardians,

Newport High School would like to thank you for your patience and understanding as we have worked to provide teaching, learning, meals, and technology in new and unique ways since the school closure in March. Guidelines from the Oregon Department of Education have been fluctuating, causing multiple changes this year. The new requirements released January 19th are outlined below and show where Lincoln County’s metrics currently sit.

(New) Advisory Metrics – January 19, 2021

Lincoln County Covid-19 Risk Levels Summary

NHS is looking to increase the number of students on campus participating in Limited In-Person Instruction (LIPI). Currently, students with Limited or No Internet Connectivity can be on campus in the morning four days a week to access the internet. Newport High’s limited in person instruction will expand during Term 3 to include an AM and PM cohort with transportation available. There are many ways to qualify for in person instruction and families interested in the opportunity to have their student on campus should complete the survey at the bottom of the letter. The survey also includes questions to help us plan for Term 4 (April 12-June 15). Some form of online instruction will be an option during Term 4 even if we are back in person.

Term 2 ends Friday, February 5th. We encourage all families to review Gradebook and Google Classroom with their students and complete any late work prior to the 5th. Term 3 class schedules were emailed to students and will be active on Gradebook February 8th, the first day of the term. Teachers will email new Google Classroom codes to students by February 3rd.

Planning for in person instruction has been ongoing. Safety protocols are being followed by all students attending in person. Safety protocols are emailed to students prior to attending and will be mailed home prior to having all students on campus. Student Council students, with the help of Video Production teacher Ms. Schell, created a helpful video to show students some basic protocols: https://youtu.be/LYT3Pc-XP18.

Thank you for your continued support and positivity as we strive to do what is best for ALL of our students during these challenging times. I value your opinions and encourage open communications through email, phone or a meeting. I realize there is no way to make everyone happy in this situation, but I value your feedback and will use it to find a way forward. A parent meeting will be scheduled as we move closer to Hybrid Instruction.

Please take the time to complete the following survey to help us better serve students at Newport High.
