Students in Ms. Murphy’s Advanced Freshmen English class typically have a series of fun activities connected to the literature they read throughout the year. Finding creative ways to continue traditions while maintaining all of the safety measures has been difficult. “Even though we are in challenging times, we want to provide ways for our students to connect with their learning and with their community. I am so appreciative of the support of Principal Moore and the several local business owners who are helping me the next three weeks,” Ms. Murphy.
Years ago, Ms. Murphy created the Knothole as an activity during her To Kill a Mockingbird unit. In the reading of the novel, she would designate a location in the classroom as the knot hole and occasionally leave simple little “gifts” that parallel the story line. “While on the surface the activity is about the fun of finding the knot hole and being the first one to find the gift inside, it also helps them connect to the story,” Ms. Murphy. Over four weekends, clues will be sent out to students in her class indicating the location of the Knothole.
Sam Case Elementary was the first location where Principal Moore was waiting. “It was my pleasure to help with an activity that supports the Growing Up Cub mentality. I was able to connect with parents from all schools and kids too. It was encouraging for me to see the faces of our families as they are all our families.” Rylee Black was the first to figure out the clues this morning, followed by Brock Spink and Claire Hurty.
Newport High School wants to thank all of the businesses and individuals who are helping on this activity. Each Saturday, another winner will be announced and business recognized.
(This activity is not required for class and has no connection to student’s grades. It is simply something fun for them to do on a Saturday morning.)
