Newport Boys Swimming clenched the 2019 State Title by a landslide on Saturday.  Newport had athletes competing in 17 of 22 events during Preliminaries on Friday morning and 12 of 22 events during Finals Saturday.  NHS Boys had the highest first place point total of 90 points, breaking the previous highest total of 83 points set in 2010.  The Boys Team also had the largest winning margin of 44 points over the second place Marshfield team, shattering the previous margin of 28 points also in 2010. With the “500 squad” (Lucas Ellingson-Cosenza, Luke Bachart, Tristan Scarborough, and Kolby Spink) making the Finals in the 500 Freestyle event, the Cubs became the first team in 4A history to place four entries in an individual event.  The 500 Freestyle event also had the Cubs in first (Ellingson-Cosenza) and second (Bachart) places, a first in 4A history of a team capturing the top two spots.  For the first time since 2007, and only the second time in OSAA 4A history, the Cubs Boys, showing their depth, swept all three team relays: 200 Medley, 200 Freestyle, and 400 Freestyle.  Final Boys scores had NHS above all 5A schools.  Newport Boys also won the Championship in 2018.  Two new Newport High Boys swimming records were set at the OSAA 4A State meet including: Caden Shanks who set a record for the 100 Yard Backstroke with a finals time of 52.82 breaking the previous record of 53.13 set in 2014; and the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay team of Ellingson-Cosenza, Nick Topar, Bachart, and Shanks who set a record with their 3:18.05 time, which broke the 3:19.46 record set at last year’s State Championships.

Lauren Bobo-Shisler was the only girl to qualify for Finals on Saturday.  Bobo-Shisler broke her 50 Yard Freestyle record set at Districts at Preliminaries on Friday and again in Finals.  She also broke her 100 Yard Freestyle record in the Finals.  Bobo-Shisler placed third in the 50 Yard Freestyle and second in the 100 Yard Freestyle.  Placing in both of her events, she scored 9 points for the Cubs Girls resulting in an 11th Place finish.

Newport Swim is coached by Head Coach Angela Sremba and Assistant Coaches: Gavin Santiago, Clayton Jacobson, Shawn Martin, Ryan Russell, Rubi Arizmendi, and Kellen Wood.
