Newport, OR – To assist students in preparing for and applying to college, Newport High School participated in Oregon’s statewide College Application Week held November 5th-8th.  The goal of the week was to help all seniors apply to some type of post high school program, including certificate programs, two-year degree programs, and four-year degree programs.  During College Application Week, students at NHS participated in a variety of college awareness activities including Path to Scholarship Workshops, lab time to apply, OSAC Support, and visits from multiple colleges.  To date, 153 seniors at Newport High School have applied to 262 universities, community college, trade programs and military.  For many students, it was a stressful week of planning their futures; for others, it was a game changer.  As one student finished up her last college application, she turned to her mentor with tears in her eyes and said “this will totally change my life, won’t it?”

College Application Week is a statewide initiative coordinated by Oregon GEAR UP, in collaboration with a steering committee representing the K-12 community, community based organizations, and all sectors of Oregon’s higher education system.  It is a participating program of the American Council on Education’s American College Application Campaign.  Over 100 high schools and community based organizations will host College Application Week events during the month of November.  For more information visit oregongoestocollege.org.  College Application Week is one of three events designed to help seniors through the process of applying, financing and selecting the best post-high school plan to reach their goals.
